STEM Playground makes comeback in August

MIRI: The second edition of the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Playground is here again, hoping to draw in at least 7,000 visitors.

The event will be held for two consecutive days starting on Aug 3.

The event venues are Pustaka Negeri Sarawak Miri, Miri City Fan and Miri Civic Centre.

Last year, the event attracted more than 6,000 visitors.

It is organised by the Sarawak government through Tabung Ekonomi Gagasan Anak Bumiputera Sarawak (Tegas) supported by Ministry of Education, Science and Technological Research (MESTR) and Sarawak Multimedia Authority (SMA) in collaboration with Curtin University Malaysia, Miri Campus.

This year’s event themed “Discover, Create, Innovate” aimed to cultivate interest in STEM among students as young as five years old, said Tegas chief operating officer Awangku Merali Pengiran Mohamed during a press conference here yesterday.

Among the objectives are to strengthen current STEM and lCT education in primary, secondary and tertiary institutions, to mitigate the declining trend of enrolment into science stream in Sarawak and to provide innovative and creative teaching support system outside the classroom.

Apart from the over 20 interactive exhibits, there will also be various STEM-related competitions such as STEM Challenge Tech Track and Young Innovators Challenge.

Admission is free and the event starts from l0am until 5pm.
