KUCHING: Stern actions must be taken against contractors who fail to deliver any projects in time.

In stating this, Upper Rajang Development Agency (URDA) chairman Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi pointed out that there were contractors who had taken several projects under the agency but performed badly in delivering them.

“I do not want to mention any names or companies but there are contractors who are doing poorly and yet they continue to cling on.

“The problem is that because of their inability to deliver, the elected representatives in the areas are blamed and the folk are not able to benefit from the projects.

“Because of their poor performances, everyone including the government which had funded the project are being cheated,” he said.

Nanta said this when officiating at the closing of SCORE-Access Road to Tunoh, Kapit Project Stakeholders Engagement Workshop at the Land Custody and Development Authority (LCDA)  Auditorium at The Isthmus yesterday.

Nanta, who is Kapit MP, suggested that projects be spread out to other good contractors instead of giving all the projects to one particular company.

Although  bad contractors should be reprimanded, he agreed that they should initially be given an extended time to complete the projects.

“If thereon they are still unable to deliver, then we should not be too merciful because we do not want to jeopardise the projects.

“I do not know about blacklisting such contractors but if they are unable to perform, then we should not contract  them for a period of time.

“That way, I believe, our projects will be implemented and delivered well,” said Nanta.
