KUCHING: The Sarawak Timber Industry Development Corporation (STIDC) adds another feather to their cap after accepting the prestigious award at BrandLaureate Best Brand for 2022-2023 in the Nation Pride category for Sustainable Forest Management in Kuala Lumpur on Aug 16.

STIDC general manager Zainal Abidin Abdullah said the award was a testimony of recognition for the corporation’s efforts to drive sustainability by facilitating vibrant growth for the timber industry in Sarawak.

He said this was also in line with the Sarawak government’s aspiration for the timber industry to achieve annual export earnings of RM8 billion by 2030, as outlined in the Post-COVID-19 Development Strategy 2030 (PCDS2030).

STIDC, he said, was at the forefront of forest certification in line with Sarawak government policy to certify all long-term timber licences by 2025.

He added that STIDC also embarked on forest plantations to ensure a sustainable and renewable supply of raw materials for the industry’s growth.

“As entrusted by the state government, STIDC is leading the development of bamboo planting and bamboo-based downstream industries.

“Through our subsidiaries and associate companies, STIDC inculcates the circular economy by utilising mill and forest residues to produce products like wood chips, fiberboards, and wood pellets, walking the talk that nothing should go to waste,” he said in a statement today.

Zainal Abidin, who was present to receive the award, described it as a double joy for the corporation as it came timely just two days after celebrating their 50th anniversary on Aug 14 at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK).

He said that STIDC’s driving sustainability efforts were in line with the state, national, and global agenda to ensure balanced growth as guided by the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) of the United Nations.

He added that this was also to align the development of the timber industry with the three core pillars of PCDS2030 to become a developed state by 2030 through economic prosperity, environmental sustainability, and social inclusivity.
