Still a joyous festival for Christians

KUCHING: Most Christians in Sarawak on day celebrated Easter virtually by watching services online in the comfort of their homes.

Easter, which commemorates the resurrection of Jesus Christ, is one of the most holy days in the Christian calendar.

But restrictions against mass gatherings in churches because of the Covid-19 pandemic kept many families at home today.

Only churches in green and yellow districts were permitted to open and they could only accept up to 50 percent of their capacity while maintaining a physical distance of one metre.

Nevertheless, although many Christians could not attend services in the churches, Easter was still a joyous festival for them. This is because they believe Jesus was resurrected and came back to life on Easter and that his resurrection symbolised his victory over sin and death.

I celebrated this year’s Easter in moderation with my family. We could not go to church because Covid-19 cases were still on the rise and there were several new clusters. My family followed the Easter Mass online.

This year’s Easter celebration was quite different because of the Covid-19 pandemic. I was happy it was Easter and that I was able to strengthen ties with my family.

We celebrated Easter with only our immediate family members; my father led the prayer readings and we followed the prayers online.

Following the live broadcast of the church service on Facebook or YouTube is different from attending a service in the church. Those who could go to the church had to follow the standard operating procedures (SOPs). What is important is for Christians to remember the significance of Easter.
