MIRI: Vagarious weather has caused the prices of marine produce to fluctuate. However, the stocks of fish and other marine produce are sufficient.

A brief visit to a fishermen’s market at Kampung Kuala Batu 1 yesterday revealed that the prices of some fish especially mackerel (ikan kembung) has gone up from RM20/kilo to RM22/kilo.

“For prawns, the prices depend on the sizes – the bigger they are the higher the prices from RM30 per kilogramme upward,” said a 27-year-old fishmonger, Hairuna Hamdani.

Kuala Batu 1 market is well-known among customers including those from Brunei. They throng the market daily with bigger crowds on weekends.

Ratnie Sulaiman, 34, who has been doing business at the market for more than five years, said that despite the uncertain weather customers still patronise the market.

Julia Kassim, 44, who has been helping her husband sell fish and prawns for more than 20 years, observed that prices tend to go down after the monsoon season has ended.

A regular customer, Lumit Guyu, 53, said she doesn’t mind the prices as long as she gets fresh fish.

“I usually come here for fresh fish and prawns, and yes, during the Landas season, prices of marine produce tend to go up, but by a few ringgit only,” she said.
