KUCHING: The Sarawak Patriots Association (SPA) believes it is necessary for stringent preventive measures to be implemented immediately to curb the spread of Covid-19 and flatten the curve of the increasing number of cases.

Its secretary David Hii Chin Loung said physical classes should be closed for at least two weeks to monitor the current situation.

“We need to implement immediate preventive measures to protect the children. Classes can still proceed online, but it would be advisable to stop physical classes for the time being as part of the preventive measures,” he said today.

He also stressed that during this crucial time, mass gatherings should remain banned, pointing out that numerous clusters had emerged from those involved at social ceremonies or activities.

“Although this is an unpopular opinion, we should remind ourselves that it is only temporary, at least until the vaccination process is done.”

He noted that Bintulu had recently implemented a measure on compulsory wab test for any person entering or leaving Bintulu.

“Certain quarters had criticised the decision of the Bintulu Divisional Disaster Management Committee for implementing this practice, but it was necessary to a certain extent to limit inter-state travel.

“Due to the recent increase of  cases, it is necessary for the local governments to limit and even bar inter-district and/or inter-state travel at this crucial moment, at least until the cases are under control.”

Hii noted that on Tuesday, Sarawak reported a new record high of 607 cases, the highest number of daily cases reported nationwide that day as well.

“If we don’t protect ourselves and others around us, we will be unable to prevent the spread. We all need to play our part to ensure that Covid-19 does not spread in our community.”

He said if everyone could strictly adhere to the standard operating procedures, the risk of infections in the community could be reduced until the vaccination process was completed.
