KUCHING: Democratic Action Party Socialist Youth (Dapsy) should quit playing the racial card and avoid causing disharmony in Sarawak as unity is one of the state’s greatest assets.

Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) information chief Datuk Idris Buang said putting Chinese characters on road signs to win the hearts of Chinese voters was a cheapskate strategy.
“As responsible politicians, we should prevent racial disintegration or racial polarisation. If you continue what you are doing now, and if your political masters allow you to do so, then you could go into history as the most stupid politicians ever,” he said in a video on Facebook.

Idris said Dapsy knew their act contravened the Local Authority Ordinance and the National Language Act 1967, but they didn’t care and went ahead with putting the Chinese characters for political purposes.

“In Malaysia, it has been enshrined in the law to agree on one language as the language of unity that is Bahasa Malaysia. It is a unity language to unite all the multicultural community. Just like in Japan, Russia, India, Indonesia and China, they have one language to unite their people,” he said.

Idris questioned Dapsy’s motive of putting up the Chinese characters on road signage at this point of time. He opined that the opposition party wanted to send a message to the Chinese community that DAP was championing the Chinese, the Chinese language and only DAP was fighting for Chinese rights.

“First, Dapsy had broken the law and second, they don’t have manners. If they really want to do this (include Chinese characters on road signage), then bring in to the State Legislative Assembly (DUN) or Dewan Rakyat to table a particular motion or private Bill on that.

He appealed DAP to stop playing the racial card all the time as this would only disintegrate the people especially in Sarawak where there were more than 20 ethnic groups.

“I think Chong Chieng Jen (Sarawak DAP chairman) and the rest of you, it is high time that you people sit down and ask yourself… Sarawak and Malaysia is a blessed place, you have the same rights as everyone of us.

“The law is treating you well, the policy is treating everyone fairly and squarely. All that is in our constitution, it is the fruits of what our forefathers have fought for and agreed to together.

“So, please… The most important thing as I have said many times before, our best asset is living together in harmony, having the security and peace, and only with that we can move around in peace.”

He also asked DAP when they were in the government for the past 22 months, what good have they done to unite the people and strengthen national unity?

“Unlike Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) under the leadership of Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg, he thinks of everyone not only the Chinese, Malays, Dayaks, but all races.

“And as a YB, I also help the Chinese schools in my constituency. And the Chinese community are just like my brothers and sisters.

“So, what is your (DAP) problem? You want votes, do something better lah,” said the Muara Tuang assemblyman.
