The fire under control.

KUCHING: Councillor Wilfred Yap said he will request for Padawan Municipal council (MPP) and the Fire and Rescue Services Department (Bomba) to have a fire prevention-related joint inspection at Kota Sentosa commercial centre soon.

Yap, who is Sentosa Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) chairman, said the joint exercise was to ensure fire hydrants were in good working condition and fire extinguishers were placed where they should be.

Yap’s proposal came on the heel of a fire that occurred in Kota Sentosa on Tuesday night.

The fire started from an electrical shop and spread to two adjacent shops.

Yap, who was at the scene yesterday, praised firemen for putting up a brave fight and the police and members of the public who helped to deal with the situation.

He, however, voiced his concern at the attitude of drivers who stopped or unnecessarily slowed down their vehicles “just to watch such a disaster”.

“Stopping or slowing down in such a manner hinders the authorities from carrying out their duties efficiently.

“Worst still, there were those who drove to the scene of the fire merely to enjoy a spectacle. This is clearly wrong and must stop,” Yap said.

He was glad no one was hurt in the incident.
