KUCHING: Strict compliance to standard operating procedures (SOPs) must be observed and practised if the state election is held during the current Covid-19 outbreak.

Sarawak Federation of Chinese Associations (SFCA) president Datuk Richard Wee said the current SOP needed to be fine-tuned without compromising its intents and purposes.

He was commenting on Election Commission (EC) chairman Datuk Abdul Ghani Salleh’s recent remark that the coming 12th Sarawak Election can be held even during the recovery movement control order (RMCO) period, provided that all parties work together and comply with the new norms and the Covid-19 Prevention Guidelines.

“I agree with the views expressed by the chairman of the Election Commission (EC), Datuk Abdul Ghani Salleh.

“While we do our best to address the medical issues at hand, we also need to have methods and mechanisms put in place to ensure that the safety and health issues are there to mitigate the pandemic,” he told New Sarawak Tribune today (Jan 8).

Wee further stressed that in holding the state polls, the relevant authorities must have the ability and confidence to strictly enforce all regulations in accordance with the standard operating procedures (SOPs) set by the government.
