KUCHING: The State Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) chairman Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas said stricter measures on entry procedures to Sarawak will be announced tomorrow.

Today he held an emergency meeting and took note of the increase in daily positive Covid-19 cases in neighbouring states and countries.

“We are surrounded by a ring of fire, therefore, SDMC has formulated a strategy to protect the state from continuing imported cases from outside of Sarawak,” he told a press conference when delivering SDMC’s Covid-19 update today.

Citing an example, he said the Philippines recorded 2,015 Covid-19 cases on Sept 29, with a cumulative total of 309,303 cases as of Sept 29.

“In Indonesia, there were 4,002 new Covid-19 cases on Sept 29, with a total of 282,724 overall cases. Singapore recorded 23 cases on Sept 29 and 57,742 cases in total.

“Sabah recorded 73 cases on Sept 29 with 1,843 cases in total. Brunei recorded zero cases on Sept 29 with a cumulative total of 146 cases,” he reminded.

He said based on the statistics, it can be seen that Sarawak is surrounded by states and countries with high number of positive Covid-19 cases.

“This is why a decision (was made) and precautionary measures must be taken by Sarawak in order to prevent the spread of Covid-19 into the state,” he stressed.

On another note, Uggah also informed that the number of Covid-19 yellow zones in the state remains at two districts, namely Kuching and Lawas.

He said Lawas previously recorded three locally transmitted Covid-19 cases and one locally transmitted case in Kuching within the past 14 days.

“This brings the total number of Covid-19 green zones in the state to 38 districts,” he added.
