KUCHING: Sarawak’s flourishing economy is complemented by its forward-thinking educational policy, particularly the provision of free tertiary education.

This approach is especially relevant in the current scenario, as noted by the Dean of the Faculty of Education, Language and Communication at Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) Professor Dr. Ambigapathy Pandian.

“Given the current scenario, I believe that this policy is good for the Sarawakians as education is the core of human development. With this policy implemented, Sarawakians can be uplifted,” he told New Sarawak Tribune in an interview today (Dec 29).

He also suggested that the Sarawak government extend its support to Sarawakian students pursuing their education in non-Sarawakian institutions.

“If it is possible, I think the state government should also support those who are studying at other universities with some vouchers. With that, wherever our Sarawakians go, their studies will be funded with the vouchers,” he added.

Additionally, he lauded the government’s recent decision to allocate RM90.42 million to the National Higher Education Fund Corporation (PTPTN). This funding is aimed at clearing at least 30 per cent of the debts owed by Sarawakian students.
