BETONG: The Sarawak government, under the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) coalition, places a strong emphasis on English language proficiency among Sarawakians.

According to Layar assemblyman Gerald Rentap Jabu, English is no longer considered a foreign language but a language for economics, technology and science.

“English is widely used in the entrepreneurial, science, technology, digital as well as other sectors.

“If we want to develop a dynamic and competitive local human capital, then we must start educating our children (from a young age) to speak and write in English.

“At the same time, we are also focusing on Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education among the young people.

“In line with that, GPS has set up the Centre of Technical Excellence Sarawak (Centexs) that provides a variety of courses (including technical and digital) for our local youth. The fees are fully funded by the Sarawak government,” he said at an event here yesterday.

Rentap, who is also the Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) Youth chief, called on the young people to seize the opportunity to pursue their knowledge at Centexs as its graduates were highly marketable.

“Get advice from your school counsellors or visit the nearest Centexs branch.

“Skilled and knowledgeable human capital will have brighter careers,” he added.
