KUCHING: Hope Place is supporting a mother of seven children grappling with a mood disorder — Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) — and financial burden in Bau with basic necessities.

According to the non-governmental organisation (NGO), following a recent visit to the 37-year-old single mother, Zu, she is responsible for her children aged from eight months to 17 years  while managing her own mental health.

“Zu used to work as a cleaner and sell homemade ‘kuih’, but her life took a difficult turn in 2021 when she was diagnosed with MDD and had to undergo treatment at Sentosa Hospital.

“While she continues to take medication and attend counselling sessions, her husband, who is working in West Malaysia, provides only sporadic financial support,” Hope Place said in a statement today.

However, financial constraints are a constant worry, as the RM350 monthly social welfare assistance barely covers their expenses.

With inconsistent support from her husband, Zu struggles to make ends meet, especially with a monthly rent of RM350 to take care of.

Despite the odds, she remains devoted to her children, who are excelling in school.

Zu’s resilience and love for her children shine through, as she dreams of resuming her ‘kuih’ making business when her oldest child finishes Form 5.
