SIBU: Dewan Rakyat Deputy Speaker Alice Lau has assured the Sarawak Teachers Union (STU) of her support in its efforts to defend the rights and welfare of teachers.

She believed that collaboration between the government, NGOs, and the community is the key to success in achieving a shared vision for a better education.

“I wish to congratulate and express my deepest appreciation to the STU Sibu Division which includes Kanowit and Selangau for their excellent achievements throughout this time. The spirit of struggle shown by all members of STU is an exemplary and inspiring example,” she said at the opening of the STU Sibu Division’s  21st annual general meeting held at Laila Taib College here Saturday (April 20).

Lau who is Lanang Member of Parliament was represented by her special assistant Stanley Chiew.

Also present were STU secretary-general, Chung Fui San and STU Sibu Division chairman, Yong Sie Hing.

Lau called on the teachers who are serving in Sarawak who have not yet joined STU, to join as soon as possible because only a union that is strong enough has the right to negotiate with related parties and can defend its members.

“I also encourage all of you to dare to innovate and be open to different views. Every opinion and idea is valuable, and through constructive dialogue and discussion, I believe you can reach the best decision for the good of all.

“Remember that the role of a committee member in STU is not just a position, but also a trust that needs to be carried with integrity and sincerity. Together, we can shape a brighter future of education and have a positive impact on the lives of thousands of teachers,” she asserted.
