KUCHING: The Sarawak Teachers’ Union (STU) applaud the announcement made by the Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) on the postponement of school reopening.

STU stated that it is an important decision as it takes into account the safety of all parties involved in the process of schooling.

Reopening schools in the districts of Kuching, Samarahan, Julau, Meradong, Sibu, Kapit, Bintulu, Subis and Miri will be postponed for two weeks from March 1 to 14.

“Parents, students and teachers will be very relieved at this decision as they will not worry anymore of being exposed to Covid-19, especially in the infected areas,” it said in a statement.

STU reminds parents, students and teachers to make sure that home study will continue as scheduled so that no instructional time will be put to waste.

“Teachers affected by the announcement are to continue their teaching through home teaching and present quality lessons to the students.

“Provide effective guidelines to the students on how to use the DidikTV programmes in their home study,” it said.

STU would like to thank the State Education Department and SDMC for listening to parents, students and teachers on the postponement of schools in the red zones areas.

STU also appreciates the committee for the effort in setting up a joint committee under the Ministry of Education, Science and Technological Research and the Education Department to ensure that the school session will run efficiently and safely throughout the state.
