KUCHING: Sarawak Teachers Union (STU) has welcomed the postponement of the reopening of primary and secondary schools in Kuching, Padawan and Samarahan districts to Aug 17.

President Macky Joseph said the postponement was timely as he acknowledged it as a sign of concern for the safety of students and staff.

“Everyone plays an important role in combating the outbreak of Covid-19. Thus, we must comply with the standard operating procedure set by the government.

“Obey it. Practice it,” he said in a statement on Thursday (July 30).

He also advised parents and guardians to ensure that the students and pupils are safe and healthy at all times before going back to the school.

“If they are feeling sick, please stay at home and get proper medication immediately.”

In a statement on Wednesday, the Sarawak Disaster Management Committee said the postponement would be extended to 25 more schools in Padawan and 24 more schools in Samarahan, involving Remove Class, Form One to Four, Lower Form Six, and Primary One to Six.
