KANOWIT: Disciplinary problems among students in this district is under control, said local police chief DSP Tega Bilong.

Speaking during a discussion between the police, Education Department and schools here yesterday, Tega said the police here did not encounter any serious crime cases involving students.

Tega said in the whole of last year, there was only one narcotics case and one crime case which involved students.

“Up till this month, there has been no crime case that involved students,” he said, adding that in the whole Kanowit of district, there was only one crime case.

Still, he advised schools not to rest on their laurels as they could help monitor their students as a way of thwarting any crime among them.

“Closer rapport between schools and school communication officers (PPS) who are police officers is the best mechanism to stop students from abusing drugs or commit other crimes,” he said.

Tega wanted PPS to visit their respective schools at least twice a month to give advice on student discipline.

“PPS can visit anytime and not only during school gatherings. They can also be present at parent-teacher association meetings to meet the principals or headmasters or students,” he said.

Later during a Q&A session, the schools requested the police to hold anti-crime seminars and conduct frequent patrols around the schools.

Those attending the session included four senior police officers, 30 lower rank police officers, an officer from Kanowit district education office and 26 principals and headmasters in the district.
