SIBU: Attention all you eloquent speakers! Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) is inviting students to participate in its public speaking competition organised in conjunction with its Engagement Day with the public.

The competition will take place at the lobby of Wisma Sanyan on April 27.

Contestants can choose any of the following topics: 3Rs, Say No To Plastic Bag, Plastic Bottle and Plastic Straw, Reduce Your Waste, Illegal Dumping, E-Waste, Zero Waste Fashion, Conserve Energy and Water, DIY Ideas, Stop Junk Mail and Go Chemical Free.

In its press statement yesterday, the council said the number of participants for each category is limited to 12 persons only.

The language used is English.  The competition is divided into two categories, namely, Category 1 (Form 1 to 3) and Category 2 (Form 4 to 6).

Speeches should not be less than three minutes and not more than five minutes in length.

The statement added the speakers were expected to be innovative in their choices of topics, drawing upon combinations of research, personal experiences and imagination.

The speeches must also be original and the speakers should use language which is appropriate to the topic, audience and formality of the occasion.

They should avoid off-colour jokes, slang expressions and “bathroom humour” statements which might be construed as slanderous, embarrassing or containing gender, cultural or racial stereotypes.

The champion in Category 1 will receive RM200 while the second prize winner will go home with RM100 and third prize winner RM80. There will be three consolation prizes of RM30 each.

The champion in Category 2 will receive RM400, second prize winner RM300 and third prize winner RM150. There are three consolation prizes of RM80 each.

The top three winners from both categories will also be given a powerbank, a pendrive and a certificate each while the consolation winners will walk home with a thermos, a pendrive and a certificate each.

The closing date for entry is on April 26 at noon.   For further enquiries, contact Ting Siew and Hii Kim Ling at 084-314224.
