SARIKEI: It is fun to be a ‘teacher’ every once in a while, and entertain students, said Sarikei Fire and Rescue chief Mahmudin Narudin.

He said this to the press after attending a fire extinguisher demonstration programme at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Sungai Paoh here today.

“Even though we have organised programmes such as this before, it’s still heart-warming to see the younger generation putting an interest in the know-how of being a firefighter,” he added.

“Being a firefighter teaches you a lot of knowledge such as minimising the risks of injuries, destruction of property and loss of lives,” he said.

Mahmudin pointed out that the students were also presented with an opportunity to use fire equipment, besides knowing how save themselves and their friends in the event of a fire.

“I hope that the programme can expose students and teachers, as well as getting them to know the responsibilities of a firefighter,” he said.

“Besides putting out fires, firefighters are also involved in community activities,” he added.

Mahmudin urged students to register themselves as part of the fire cadet programme for their school as there are various activities that can be done together in the future.

“We welcome any schools or agencies who wish to visit the Sarikei Fire Station, our doors are always open,” he said.

“I would also like to take this opportunity to wish all my colleagues Happy Firefighters Day in line with today’s International Firefighters Day,” he added.
