KUCHING: There is ample food supply to cater for the people’s consumption during the upcoming festive season, assured Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan.

He said the current supply of food in Lawas was enough to last for one to three months.

“From our visits to a few places today, involving various wholesalers, the food supply is enough for Hari Raya and Gawai Dayak.

“Whatever food items are on short supply will be replenished quickly by ordering them in advance,” he told reporters in Lawas yesterday.

Awang Tengah who is also Food Supply subcommittee chairman said, while the food stock along with liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) is enough, what isn’t is cement for construction use.

“We have allowed many construction sectors to reopen and one of the essential materials is cement.

“We don’t have a lot of them, I have asked the wholesaler to order the material as we know the construction sector will move quickly after the festive season. So, it will affect the project’s progress if building materials are insufficient,” he said.

Awang Tengah said although many business sectors have reopened, continuous monitoring would be done by the Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry (KPDNHEP) to prevent sellers from increasing their prices.

“Same goes for our 800 points of sale (POS), most of which are in the rural areas. We will ensure that the food items at these POS are enough and if needed, we will use our quota from June to cover the demand from this month,” he said.
