KUCHING: Stop politicising the Kuching-Samarahan Expressway gridlock issue, and instead focus on finding an effective solution.

Kuching City South Council (MBKS) Mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng made the appeal at the opening of the temporary alternative road along the expressway heading towards BDC, Jalan Setia Raja and Jalan Stutong, here today (Jan 6).

“Like I’ve always said, when there’s a problem or issue, let’s solve it together and come up with a solution for the people.

“There’s no need to politicise, point fingers, or scold anyone,” Wee told reporters.

Stressing the cooperation from various parties is necessary, he urged the public to go through the proper channels should problems arise, rather than venting their frustrations on social media.

He said the opening of the alternative road may cause some inconvenience to the residents, but it’s only a temporary measure until the expressway is completed.

“Once traffic is diverted, we will explore various methods to ensure that traffic on the expressway runs smoothly,” he added.

Wee said MBKS has requested for additional traffic police personnel and Kota Samarahan Municipal Council traffic wardens to help direct traffic flow.

According to a press release issued today by the Public Works Department (PWD), the alternative route can only be used by light vehicles with a load limit of five tonnes or less.

“The permitted speed limit is 30 km per hour only. Users are also advised to exercise caution when driving on the alternative route,” the department said.

PWD will inform the public from time to time if there are any changes to the date, time or area involved with these works, and road users are also advised to plan their journey in the affected areas.

The public may contact the Samarahan PWD division office through 082-672800 during office hours for information.
