KUCHING: Sixty children from the Semariang area underwent circumcision today (Feb 17) as part of the Sunathon programme organised by Masjid Al-Ghazali here.

The event was held in collaboration with Sarawak General Hospital (SGH) Surgery Department, the State Fire and Rescue Department and Wija Pharmacy Kuching.

Gracing the occasion was Deputy Minister in the Sarawak Premier Department (Law, MA63 and State-Federal Relations) Datuk Sharifah Hasidah Sayeed Aman Ghazali, who commended the mosque’s committee team for their proactive initiative.

She highlighted the programme’s role in alleviating the financial burden associated with circumcision, which has become increasingly costly over time.

Hasidah speaks during the event.

“Circumcision was once a relatively affordable practice, but now has seen a surge in costs, with procedures at private hospitals now averaging around RM200. Even government hospitals are imposing fees for the procedure.

“Therefore, given the essential nature of this practice, it can become a financial burden on families,” she said in her address.

Hasidah, who is also Semariang assemblywomen, praised the mosque committee for its efforts in taking care of the welfare of the community by providing free circumcision for children.
