MIRI: The degree options for Sunway College Kuching graduates have been expanded to include Curtin University Malaysia in Miri.

According to Curtin Malaysia on Thursday (Feb 2), the university and college signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Tuesday (Jan 31) that would allow graduates of Sunway College to pursue degrees at Curtin Malaysia, the university’s largest international campus located here in Sarawak.

Signing on behalf of Curtin Malaysia and Sunway College Kuching were Curtin Malaysia pro vice-chancellor, president and chief executive Prof Simon Leunig and Sunway College Kuching director Joseph Lim.

“This MoU is a great step forward in providing students in Sarawak with greater access to higher education.

“In addition to undergraduate courses, we offer pre-university foundation and diploma courses and postgraduate programmes, as well professional development courses for industry,” said Prof Leunig.

Meanwhile, Lim said: “We very much look forward to working with Curtin Malaysia to take forward this relationship and encourage more Sarawakians to pursue higher education in line with Sarawak’s Post-Covid Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030.”

“This also demonstrated our dedication to helping students get ready for the workforce by providing professional finance courses and credentials,” he added.

The agreement would also enable an articulation pathway for Sunway College diploma and foundation graduates to continue into Year 2 of Curtin undergraduate programmes at Curtin Malaysia.

Sarawakian students will be able to apply for Yayasan Sarawak scholarships to study at Curtin Malaysia.

The MoU also facilitates the establishment of a professional financial courses division at Curtin Malaysia to provide the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) qualification to Curtin Malaysia undergraduates who are eligible and interested in pursuing the professional qualification.

In addition, it will provide the framework for collaboration in teaching and learning (T&L) and knowledge sharing through the joint organising of seminars, conferences and workshops.

Also present were Curtin Malaysia’s domestic student recruitment and external engagement manager Muhamad Rahman Sallehin, and Sunway College Kuching’s senior operations manager and chief executive Tang Ing Sia.
