KUCHING: Sunway Healthcare Group (SHG) and i-Systems College have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to offer nursing scholarships to eligible Diploma in Nursing students.

The event here on Friday (June 23) was graced by Deputy Premier Datuk Seri Dr Sim Kui Hian, who stressed the importance of partnerships between healthcare groups and educational institutions, particularly in light of the acute shortage of nurses in the country.

He expressed his belief that these nursing scholarships would attract more young individuals to consider nursing as a profession.

By completing their education at an established college and starting their careers in an award-winning healthcare group, he hoped to foster talent and highly skilled individuals in Sarawak, not only in universities but also in technical colleges and nursing.

Despite Sarawak’s declining birth rate and population challenges, Dr Sim stressed the state’s commitment to producing more skilled labour and moving forward.

He highlighted the importance of initiatives and collaborations like this in meeting the increasing demand for human capital in the nursing field, aligning with the country’s healthcare industry needs.

According to i-System College’s statistics, the college can train 300 nursing students per year and has produced over 500 nursing graduates, with a 100 per cent employability rate within six months of graduation.

The nursing scholarship will cover various aspects, including full tuition fees, hostel accommodation, transportation, living allowances, uniforms, shoes, medical check-ups, academic bonuses, and in-patient and outpatient treatment coverage.

After completing the three-year programme at i-Systems College, graduates will be guaranteed job placements at any of the Sunway Medical Centre hospitals under SHG.

The ceremony was also attended by Sunway Healthcare Group president Datuk Lau Beng Long and i-Systems Group of Colleges CEO Datuk John Tiong.
