MIRI: Supermarkets here are only allowing each customer to buy one tray of chicken eggs to keep a lid on the recent flap over shortages in the market.

State Transport Minister Datuk Sri Lee Kim Shin said purchase limits had become necessary although chicken eggs supplies were sufficient here.

“Panic-buying will lead to shortages and we do not want any shortages on the item or on any other essential item,” he said after launching the ‘Keluarga Malaysia’ sales programme at E-Mart Hypermarket in Riam.

He assured that there is no shortage of chicken eggs and thus people here need not scramble for the eggs during this festive season.

Lee added that officers from the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs (KPDNHEP) Miri branch were monitoring the situation to ensure there is no shortage of essentials goods in this division.

Under the Keluarga Malaysia Sales programme, a total 20 essential items are being offered at prices 15 to 20 per cent lower than the market rate to ease the people’s burden.
