KUCHING: Aspiring supermodels are encouraged to audition for Supermodel Universe Borneo for an opportunity to represent the country on the international stage.

The male and female winners of the Borneo level will participate in the Supermodel Universe Malaysia grand final for the national level on Sept 1 in Kuala Lumpur, and these winners in turn will represent the nation in Bulgaria.

“This supermodel pageant is owned by the Universe Ltd Corporation in Sofia, Bulgaria, and it was created to discover new talents – male and female – in the fashion, beauty and modelling world,” said Supermodel Universe Borneo state director Dr Deborah Chong who covers both Sarawak and Sabah.

During a press conference held at The Alley Cat Café yesterday, she said that one of their key objectives is to show the concept of transparency as organisers in taking care of the welfare of the contestants, in addition to showcasing the beauty and uniqueness of Borneo participants with indigenous visages.

Dr Chong listed some of the
criteria they would be seeking in the participants, such as personality, ability to showcase outfit designs, catwalk skills and possessing the qualities of a model.

For both male and female individuals, the age restriction is 18 to 37 years of age. Male candidates must be at least 170cm tall while female candidates must have a minimum height of 165cm.

Registration fee is RM100, and Dr Chong stated that upon registration each participant will receive a goodie bag worth RM1,500 backed by sponsors.

“The male and female winners will each get RM8,000 worth of prizes from various sponsors,” she said.

In both male and female categories, the first and second runners-up will receive RM6,000 and RM4,500 worth of prizes respectively, also covered by the sponsors.

“We also have subsidiary titles for Ms and Mr Photogenic, Fitness, Indigenous, and Catwalk. Each will receive RM500 worth of cash vouchers,” Dr Chong revealed.

Platinum sponsors for the competition are Nephos Aesthetics, Elite Estetik, and Buriek Kuyong, Melissa Francis Beauty Saloon, and Anbie’s Beauty.

The supermodel competition covers both Sarawak and Sabah, and auditions have already been held in Bintulu and Miri on July 15 and 16 respectively. The Kuching auditions will be held on the coming weekend on July 20 and 21 at The Stage Studio, while the Kota Kinabalu auditions will be held on the following weekend on July 27 and 28 at Level Four Studio.

“So far the response has been very good. We are aiming for ten male and ten female finalists,” said Dr Chong, adding that the Sabah finalists will make their way to Kuching for the final at Hoi Tin Lau Restaurant on August 16, 6 pm onwards.

Dr Chong stated that tickets would be priced at RM100 to RM150, depending on public response.

“We are targeting a minimum of 250 pax,” she said.

Also present from the Supermodel Universe Borneo committee were president Raygyna Hayden, vice chairman for Sarawak sector Hilary Bee, vice chairman for Sabah sector Kulleh Grasi, creative director Sasha Navara and assistant creative director Sakura Irish.
