KUCHING: Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) will strive to recapture the Padungan seat in the coming state election.

SUPP Kuching branch chairperson Datuk Lily Yong said the party would not be complacent despite Padungan assemblyman Wong King Wei’s departure from Democratic Action Party (DAP) and his refusal to seek re-election for the seat in the coming state election.

“Padungan has never been a quiet seat and understandably so, because Padungan is located at the heart of the capital of Sarawak,” Yong said.

She told reporters this at the symbolic handing over of Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) flags from SUPP Kuching branch to the party’s two potential candidates for Padungan — Bong Lian Huan and Jong Yean Pin, at Carpenter Street here on Saturday.

Yong said she was not surprised that there were many candidates rumoured to be fielded in Padungan in the coming state election.

However, she emphasised that this did not matter.

“As a politician, we need to know there will be hidden dangers even in the best opportunity,” she said.

Yong, who is also SUPP vice president, said that what was most important was to be sincere in carrying out duties and speaking up for the people.

“Only then can you win the people’s heart,” she said.

Incumbent Padungan assemblyman Wong announced his decision to quit the DAP on July 26, stating that he was ‘disillusioned’ with the direction and way the party had been managed.

According to him, DAP had deviated entirely from the objectives, aims, and struggles of earlier days when he joined the party.
