KUCHING: The management of Surau Darul Rahmah, Kampung Gita Tengah here is planning to provide free Wi-Fi coverage.

Chairman Abdul Razak Samail said the initiative was in line with the Sarawak government’s digital economy aspiration.

The only problem, he said, was getting funding for the purpose, adding that the committee was still going through the best Internet plan offered by the various service providers.

“We need to look at the features so that they can cater to our community, such as coverage, speed and monthly rate,” he said during the opening ceremony for the completed Rural Transformation Programme project under the Tupong constituency today.

Kampung Gita Tengah community leader Mohd Nor believed that the availability of free Wi-Fi at the surau would draw youths to the premises.

“This is the digital era, whether you like it or not, we need to embrace this revolution as it’s part of our necessity.

“The Covid-19 pandemic has proven that having an Internet facility is vital in order to contain the spread of the virus.

“We hope we can get the funds to provide Wi-Fi facility at all surau and mosques in this village. This is all for community development.”
