The prospect of Sarawak’s revenue surpassing the RM12bil achieved last year will bring significant impacts to the state’s overall economy.

Federation of Chinese Associations of Kuching, Samarahan and Serian Division president Datuk Richard Wee said that this achievement would provide Sarawak with additional allocations for major initiatives outlined by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, aiming to propel the state towards becoming a high-income region within Malaysia.

He added that initiatives in areas such as infrastructure development, tourism digitisation, technological advancements, agricultural reforms, improved social benefits, and enhanced security would contribute positively to Sarawak’s progress.

“All of these initiatives will have multiplier effects on the entire economy and business community. With such impacts, the rakyat will benefit from the spillover effects of the expanded economic opportunities,” he told New Sarawak Tribune on today (Aug 10).

Earlier, Abang Johari hinted that Sarawak’s revenue for the current year could surpass the figure recorded last year. With the state’s revenue reaching RM5bil in the first quarter of this year, he expressed optimism that this could signify further growth by the year’s end.

Regarding the challenges of maintaining this momentum, Wee stressed the importance of having efficient government machinery and capable systems in place to meet the demands of such exponential growth.

“We must have an efficient government machinery and a high standard of civil service that can complement the active participation of the private sector in driving these policies forward.”

As the private sector serves as the primary engine of growth, Wee noted that the multiplier effects on the entire business community would elevate the state’s economy to new heights.

“With such achievements, the government should consider enhancing the education system, healthcare, and social benefits for the people. This will ensure that all strata of Sarawak’s population can benefit from its prosperity and accomplishments.”
