Suspect detained, contraband goods seized

BINTULU: The Customs Department here on Sunday morning seized cigarettes and alcoholic beverages with unpaid duties and detained one suspect in an operation held at a premises at Medan Assyakirin.

State Customs Director-General Datuk Sharifah Halimah Tuanku Taha said the enforcement team confiscated 3,352 sticks of cigarettes and 32.52 litres of alcoholic beverages with unpaid duties and taxes amounting to RM 2,717.84.

The suspect, who has been detained, is being investigated under Section 135 (1)(d) of the Customs Act 1967 and faces a fine of no less than 10 times the Customs’ duties or RM100,000.

Sharifah, in a statement issued yesterday, also urged the public to convey any information involving drugs or smuggling of cigarettes, alcoholic beverages or fireworks by contacting the department’s toll-free line at 1800-88-8855 or the State Customs Headquarters directly at 082-472133.
