KUCHING: The Sarawak Government will focus on its involvement in fields of energy that can contribute to environmental sustainability.

Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said this includes emphasising on the new economy that uses green technology.

“This is one of the areas that we are going to focus on as promised in the Gabungan Parti Sarawak’s (GPS) election manifesto,” he said.

He said this in a press conference after attending the Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) supreme council meeting held at Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) on Sunday (Jan 9) night.

“We will also implement the others, such as in the field of health and education,” he said.

He added that is why public health is placed under the Ministry of Public Health, Housing, and Local Government where it will be the state government’s responsibility to look after health matters.

“Meanwhile, we will continue to strive to promote medical research in our state through the research centre that we have established next to the Sarawak Heart Centre in Kota Samarahan.”

The chief minister also pointed out that the world including Sarawak was faced with climate change.

“Certainly, this has got to do with environmental management and as such, this will be an area that will be given emphasis in our administration in the five years to come.

“We will replant trees and at the same time, we want to study more on sustainable forest management,” he said.

Abang Johari said that this was important for the future and to have an environment the world wants today.
