MUKAH: Politeknik Mukah (PMU) has introduced a “Car free day: Burn fat not fuel” initiative in its effort to instill and sustain the green culture in polytechnic and community colleges in facing the SmartGreen PolyCC Blueprint (2021-2016) challenge.

Its deputy director (Academic) Iskandar Reduan said the initiative was an initial effort aimed at reducing carbon emission at PMU.

He added it was also in tandem with the government’s effort to raise awareness and knowledge among PMU populace on carbon emission, which contributed to global warming, while striving to make PMU a better institution to work and stay at.

“I hope the initiative will bring about an impact among the PMU populace and others also, in our effort to enhance air quality and make it a carbon-free campus,” he said when launching the programme virtually on Tuesday (Jan 11). It was also attended by PMU heads of departments, units and courses.

He added it would be carried out weekly on very Tuesday from 9am to 12 noon.

SmartGreen PolyCC chairperson Nuwairani Azurawati Siha said among the objectives was to increase awareness among PMU populace on the effect of carbon emission which caused global warming.

She added it is hoped the initiative would also help to instill concern, sense of responsibility and commitment among the campus populace in protecting the environment.

According to her, it was also to educate them on reducing the use of vehicles in the campus area as it would subsequently help to bring about change for a better global climate.

She revealed all the campus populace were encouraged to walk or use bicycle on that particular day, so that the objective of reducing carbon emission in the campus area could be achieved effectively.

Nuwairani said car parks, especially for those from outside the campus, would be provided at certain places such as at the stadium, multipurpose hall and mechanical engineering workshop areas as well as at the Islamic Centre.
