KUCHING: Swinburne University of Technology, Sarawak Campus celebrates its latest milestone with a record-breaking intake of 105 students for its English Enhancement Programme (EEP).

This cohort marks the largest group the university has ever received since the programme’s inception on Aug 1 last year.

The EEP, a specially designed four-week course aimed at bolstering students’ English language proficiency and facilitating a smooth transition into university life, has witnessed a consistent rise in enrollment since its launch.

The first intake started with 41 students, followed by 38 in the second group, 65 in the third, and now a significant 105 in the current batch, which commenced on July 17 this year.

Sponsored by Yayasan Sarawak, the EEP offers Sarawakian students who meet the entry criteria a fully funded programme, along with a one-off RM300 allowance and free on-campus accommodation at Swinburne Sarawak during the programme’s duration, as per a statement on Wed (Aug 2).

“The EEP provides an immersive environment for students to collectively acquire English language skills such as academic reading, writing, and communication. The programme presents a valuable opportunity for students to gain an advantage over their peers in adjusting to university life,” Learning and Teaching Unit head Dr Bibiana Lim Chiu Yiong highlighted.

Lecturer Marione Anne Foo expressed how the EEP not only empowers students in language learning but also aids in self-discovery and general knowledge acquisition.

“Beyond enhancing English language skills, students benefit from motivational and personal awareness workshops, including ‘The Early Leader Programme,’ ‘Managing Stress,’ and ‘Self-Care,’ among others, to prepare them for their university life.”

An integral part of the EEP is the ‘Uni Life Experience’ programme, allowing students to explore numerous opportunities both on- and off-campus.

This includes engaging in social activities, networking events, adventurous experiences within the community, and connecting with seniors through the Buddy Support System on campus, as described by Foo.

Upon successful completion of the EEP, students can seamlessly articulate into Swinburne Sarawak’s regular programme intakes, kickstarting their journey towards obtaining a world-class Australian education.
