KUCHING: Thirty-seven-year-old Syed Hamzah Datuk Wan Hamid Edruce has made history with his election into the Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) Supreme Council.

Winning his Bumiputera quota seat with 529 votes, he said grassroots members showed they are supportive of having the younger generation at higher levels in the party.

He said this also showed the party’s Supreme Council is no longer confined to seniors and veterans.

“I honestly was not expecting to win because I know it is not easy to convince the elder generation to accept the young ones to lead.

“Although it was the last place in the winner’s list, it is a very significant achievement for me and a new starting point towards shaping PBB into an even more inclusive party,” he said today.

Highlighting that he was the youngest candidate and among the non-elected representatives who contested, he said the achievement is a testament to the level of democracy in PBB.

He hoped his win will make a positive impression on how the party is open to young and fresh candidates in its Supreme Council.

He said now that PBB has a new wing for those aged 18 to 28, he will do his part in getting as many young members as possible to join the party.

“The youth out there are certainly watching this development especially with the setting up of the new wing.

“The perception of young people is that it is difficult to get a post in PBB which has now been proven untrue.

“We now have someone young like me who is among the ranks of its Supreme Council,” he said.

As such, he said more activities and programmes will be organised in the future to attract the youth.

Earlier, PBB passed an amendment to the party’s constitution to accommodate the setting up of the new wing.
