MIRI: A Sarawak-level Ngepan Iban Symposium (SNI) will be held at Pullman Hotel here from Feb 10 to 11.

Chairman of the SNI Committee, Datuk Dr Penguang Manggil said the last SNI meeting was held on Saturday (Feb 4) as thorough preparation before it was carried out.

“A total of 310 participants have registered as symposium participants from all over the state of Sarawak while the dinner will be attended by 700 people,” he said.

The Deputy Minister of Public Health, Housing and Local Government said four papers will be presented by four speakers, and four topics will be discussed by 16 panellists who have experience or academic knowledge in the field throughout the two-day programme.

At the same time, a total of 25 stalls selling various craft products related to Ngepan (traditional costume) and Iban Culture were opened by entrepreneurs from various places such as Miri, Bintulu, Sibu, Kapit and Kuching.

“An old Iban Ngepan exhibition will also be held during the symposium which showcases various Iban Ngepan collections.

“In addition, other collections related to Iban Culture such as antique copper items, Pua Kumbu and others will also be exhibited as a view and benefit for today’s young generation,” he explained.

The opening ceremony on Feb 10 will be officiated at by himself while the closing ceremony will be graced by Sarawak’s Deputy Premier and Minister of Finance and New Economy II, Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas.

Penguang said SNI 2022 will be enlivened with various performances such as, ngajat, nimang, bepantun, bejawang, bekuntau, gendang pampat, gendang pangkung tingging and so on.

The Keling / Kumang & Ratu Ngepan Symposium Iban 2022 competition will be held during the closing ceremony too.
