SIBU: Ta Ann Group has achieved another milestone when its Raplex Forest Management Unit (FMU) was awarded the forest management certification under the Malaysia Timber Certification Scheme-Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification.

The certification was given on June 28 and is for a period of five years.

The Raplex Forest Management Unit is located at the Pila-Belaga region, covering an area of 63,993 hectares.

A press statement said the award was Ta Ann’s second after its Kapit FMU, which obtained the same certification in June 2018.

The Kapit FMU has an area of 149,756 hectares. It has also successfully passed a surveillance audit conducted by SIRIM QAS International Sdn Bhd this year.

The Pasin FMU, with an area of about 132,000 hectares, is currently undergoing forest management certification with Stage II auditing scheduled for early 2020, the statement added.

“By the end of 2020, all three active FMUs, with a total area of 345,749 hectares, will be fully certified with the Sustainable Forest Management Certification in compliance with the Sarawak government’s policy,” it said.

In 2014, the Sarawak government announced that certification is mandatory for timber companies operating in the heart of Borneo.

This policy is now extended to all long-term timber licenses in Sarawak to go for certification by 2022 to ensure that forests and forest resources are well managed.
