THE late Tun Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud was a statesman who contributed significantly to the betterment of Sarawak and its people.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said that nobody can deny that directly or indirectly, Sarawakians have benefited from the policies implemented by the late Taib.

“In fact, to my mind, he is an institution by itself in the essence of Sarawak history,” he said.

He said this when delivering his winding-up speech on the motion of appreciation to the former Head of State at the Sarawak State Legislative Assembly (DUN) sitting today (May 8).

Abang Johari also expressed appreciation to the late Taib for his contributions and dedications in serving the people, especially the state of Sarawak.

“We received what he has done and it is our responsibility in this August house, whether current leaders or the younger generation of leaders, to learn from Tun Taib’s leadership in steering Sarawak.

“God willing, Sarawak will become not only a focal point throughout the country but perhaps as a gem in fostering unity among the multi-ethnic and multi-religious society so that this gem will continue to shine brightly and provide inspirational contribution and inspiration for us to strengthen bonds,” he said.

Abang Johari, who is also the Gedong assemblyman, said that he is confident Sarawak will continue to be in safe hands with leadership characterised by integrity and leadership that makes paramount contributions to the people.

Earlier, the Assembly passed the motion of appreciation to the former Head of State after 29 assemblypersons had debated on the motion.
