KUCHING: Yang di-Pertua Negeri Tun Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud celebrated his 87th birthday at the Riverside Hotel in Kuching on yesterday (May 21).
The joyous occasion started at 8:30 pm with the arrival of Taib and his wife, Toh Puan Datuk Patinggi Raghad Kurdi Taib. They were welcomed by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg and his wife, Puan Sri Datuk Amar Juma’ani Tun Tuanku Bujang.
The birthday celebration was made more merrier with singing performances and a cake-cutting ceremony, as well as the presentation of ‘pulut kuning’.
A former Deputy Chief Minister of Sarawak, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Alfred Jabu Numpang in his speech praised Taib as a responsible leader who prioritises unity among different ethnic groups and upholds peace and harmony in Sarawak.
Also present to celebrate the special occasion were Deputy Premiers Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas, Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan and Datuk Seri Dr Sim Kui Hian.
Also, in the attendance were former deputy chief minister Tan Sri Datuk Patinggi Dr George Chan Hong Nam, Federal Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing, Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, Minister for Women, Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah and State Secretary Datuk Seri Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki.
