KUCHING: In view of the coming festive seasons, Sarawakians have been urged to take their own precautions against Covid-19.

“If we need to move outside the house, please wear a face mask, possibly a N95 mask, maintain physical distancing, measure our body temperature frequently, have good personal hygiene, avoid crowds and congested places,” said Sarawak Patriots’ Association (SPA) president Datuk John Lau Pang Heng on Monday (May 10).

He said preventing Covid-19 was just like crime prevention.

“Everyone must comply strictly with the standard operating procedures (SOPs) and alert each other if anyone has not observed the SOPs,” he added.

Lau said it had always been a revered tradition during Hari Raya for people to visit their Muslim friends and relatives.

“However, festive seasons in 2020 were celebrated in our own homes. So, during the 2020 celebrations, the Covid-19 infections were negligible,” he said.

Lau said SPA supported Health director-general Tan Sri Noor Hisham Abdullah’s call that everyone should not be organising mass gatherings or super spreader events for two to four weeks.

“SPA fully agrees with Noor Hisham’s recommendations, including in-house Hari Raya celebration and no open houses,” he said.

Lau added that in recent weeks, there was a sudden Covid-19 outbreak. In the first nine days of this month, an average of 500 persons tested positive for Covid-19 in Sarawak.

“For the past nine days, Malaysia has an average of 3,552 Covid-19 cases. That is far too high.

“Which is why this is a very critical time in our country. SPA feels that we need to have more self-love and control to restrict our own movements outside the house unnecessarily, not only to protect ourselves, but others around us,” he pointed out.

He added that while SPA felt that the war against Covid-19 would succeed one day, however in the meantime, it was still a battle every day.

“We are living in a state of fear of languor aggravated by images and realities of death.

“We also urge more vaccines be made available as soon as possible. SPA asks the authority to vaccinate those who have registered for vaccination as prevention is better than cure,” said Lau.
