SIBU: People here have been advised to take precautionary measures against the spread of rabies.

Chairman of Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) Clarence Ting said SMC had received so many requests to catch dogs out in public.

“SMC dog catching team has only 5 persons and can only attend to limited number of requests.

“Unless the public, especially dog owners cooperate with SMC not to let their dogs out in public more tragic incidents resulting from dog bites will continue to occur.

“SMC needs the assistance of all public members. Rabies are public menace and dog bites that are carriers of the fatal disease must be eradicated by taking dogs out in public once and for all,” he said in a statement on Saturday (June 27).

Ting stated that he was angry to learn that a second victim succumbed to rabies after being bitten by a rabid dog on June 12.

“Dog owners must not continue the existing habits of letting dogs out on the street as this could result in death from rabies,” he added.

Thus, he advised people to take precautions against the spread of rabies.

“If you are a dog owner, don’t let your dog out of house compound and do not walk in your neighbourhood where there are stray dogs,” he said.
