KUCHING: An old tank laden with diesel caught fire at an oil palm plantation in Serian yesterday.

A State Fire and Rescue Department spokesperson said the department received a distress call from the estate worker at 12.06pm.

When firefighters from Serian arrived, they found the fire, which was at its height, had already destroyed 40 per cent of the tank.

The estate workers had earlier on tried to put out the flames using two fire extinguishers but failed.

The firefighters put out the fire by closing the valve on tank.

The rescue operation ended completely at 1.16pm.

No casualties or injuries were reported.

Meanwhile, in a separate case, firefighters from the Batu Lintang Fire station rushed to the scene of an oil spill at Batu Kawa Bridge yesterday after the department received a distress call at 8.32am.

The oil spill, which happened within 500 metres of the bridge was caused by engine oil leaking from a cement truck.

The firefighters cleaned up the oil spill using foam and seven tonnes of sand supplied by the cement company. The oily route was covered with sand to ensure the safety of road users.
