‘Taste of Sibu’ book now on sale

SIBU: Members of the public can now buy the ‘Taste of Sibu’ book which showcases the uniqueness of the various types of food available in this town.

Editor and chief coordinator of the ‘Taste of Sibu’ book, Councillor Joseph Chieng said the book was published in conjunction with the Visit Sibu Year (VSY) 2017 and was launched by Minister of Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports, Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah during the official opening of the Borneo Cultural Festival (BCF) 2017 at the Sibu Town Square, recently.

He added that the publication of the book was the joint effort of three associations namely Melayu Melanau Bersatu (MMB), Sarawak Dayak National Union (SDNU) and United Chinese Association with the cooperation of Sibu Municipal Council (SMC).

“This book reflects 1Malaysia, 1Sarawak and 1Sibu, in which it represents all the communities in Sibu who live in harmony and peace,” he said at a press conference here, recently.

Also present were deputy chairlady of Sibu Municipal Council (SMC), Rogayah Jamain, who is also the organising chairlady of VSY 2017, Councillor Wong Hie Ping, chairman of Melayu Melanau Bersatu (MMB), Abang Abdul hamid Bolhassan, chairman of Sarawak Dayak National Union (SDNU) Sibu, Chambai Lindong and president UCA, Kong Hian Khim.

According to Chieng, the book (Taste of Sibu) written in English, Bahasa Malaysia and Chinese is divided into four categories, namely Chinese cuisine, local cuisine, Melayu Melanau cuisine and Iban cuisine.

“Apart from the various local traditional dishes, the book also introduces tropical dishes such as ‘ikan empurau’, ‘patin’, ‘tenggata’ and tropical food such as ‘dabai’, ‘engkala’ and’ ‘terung asam’,” he said.

The book is being sold at RM30 each and members of the public may buy it from a booth near the stage of Chinese Pavilion, Tradex (Sibu Town Square Phase 2) and Urban Transformation Centre (UTC) Sibu at the moment.

“I hope visitors to Sibu buy the book as a guide and reference or as a souvenir to give to their friends when they are back home,” he said.
