KUCHING: Tabung Baitulmal Sarawak (TBS) has distributed RM18.3 million in zakat collection to poor families (asnaf) in the state through three programmes, as of April 13.

Its general manager Datuk Abang Mohd Shibli Abang Nailie said the distributions were done through Program Mengukuhkan Keilmuan, Program Membangunkan Institusi Islam and Program Memantapkan Kebajikan Ummah.

“As of March 2021, we have distributed RM15.8 million to the poor (asnaf) throughout Sarawak,” he said at a handover ceremony of educational assistance, today.

According to him, each year TBS contributes about 70 percent of the total revenue allocation for educational assistance programmes.

“It is because as we all know, education plays an important role in changing the life of an individual, especially the poor to succeed in the future.

“For today’s programme, we presented assistance to students of higher learning institutions involving a total of RM33,000 to 15 recipients.

“We will continue to organise aid distribution programmes for the poor, including the Program Kasih Ramadan throughout Sarawak. Therefore, we call on the community to contribute in the form of money or food.

“Those who want to donate can go to the payment kiosk at the Ummah Distribution Centre (UDC) gallery in Medan Hamidah, Jalan Bako.

“The centre also provides information, payment, and livelihood assistance information and so on, while the TBS branch in Petra Jaya will process the applications received,” he explained.

He said, since UDC opened in December last year, TBS has received very encouraging response because it facilitates the affairs of the public, especially the residents around Petra Jaya area.
