BAU: Catherine Janet Tiwi, 25, who perished in the fire at Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Batu Bungan, Mulu, was laid to rest at the cemetery of St Edward Catholic Church, Kampung Skio, Jalan Jambusan here on Saturday.

Firefighters carried her coffin from her home at Kampung Skio to St Edward Catholic Church for her funeral service at around 2.40pm and then to the church cemetery.

Also present during the funeral service were the Minister of Educat ion, S c i enc e and Technological Research, Dato Sri Michael Manyin Jawong and Chairman of Kota Samarahan Municipal Council, Dato Peter Minos. Manyin afterwards said that he had revealed the problems of schools which still used generator sets throughout the state to the Education Ministry last year. He urged Pakatan Harapan ministers to get the information from the ministry’s officials.

“Get the information from the ministry officials and do not say you did not get the information because the Education Department (Sarawak) has disclosed everything.

“I was there when we gave a briefing to the former Deputy Prime Minister and former Deputy Education Minister from the Barisan Nasional (BN) July last year, “he said when replying to the Deputy Education Minister, Teo Nie Ching’s claim that the ministry had yet to receive reports on the problems of poor schools in the state. Manyin said of the 1, 454 schools in the state, 1,020 were dilapidated schools while 415 were very dilapidated.

377 schools were still using generator sets and 113 of the schools were located not far from the state’s electricity grid and could be connected to the grid.

He said under the central government budget last year, RM1 billion was approved to rebuild dilapidated schools in Sarawak this year and next year. He hoped the Education Ministry under the Pakatan Harapan government could fulfil the budget.
