SIBU: A female teacher in her 40s reportedly lost RM4,000 to a scam involving a foreign contact and an online dating application.

Sibu district police chief ACP Stanley Jonathan Ringgit said that on March 17, the woman met one Jeffrey Ben Mayne on OMI application.

He said the man described himself as a London architect.

“After a month of getting to know each other, the woman fell in love. The man told her that he was coming to Malaysia to marry her,” he said in a statement.

Then on April 17, Jeffrey told her that he was ill and had to undergo surgery and needed RM2,000 to pay for it.

“Around 7am that same day, the woman transferred RM1,000 to a Maybank account belong to one Quah Jia Hui believing that Jeffrey would marry her after he recovered.

Around 11am on May 1, Jeffrey again asked her to help him pay a hospital bill of RM3,000.

“Not realising that she was being scammed, the woman transferred RM3,000 to an Agro Bank account belonging to one Suraiya Hani,” Stanley said.
