KUCHING: The Sarawak Bumiputera Teachers Union (KGBS) concurs with the recent announcement to resume school operations, said its president Ahmad Malie.

He said he was made to understand there are about 231 primary schools that will be reopened on Monday (March 8).

“KGBS is also confident that this operations has taken into account various safety and health factors based on the standard operating procedures (SOPs).

“For KGBS, the permission for these 231 schools to operate adds to the existing schools that have resumed operation on March 1,” he said in a statement on Sunday (March 7).

“Therefore, KGBS reminds all school staff not to neglect the outlined SOPs” he said.

He also called on teachers, parents and guardians to always remind students or their children about the SOPs during the implementation of teaching and learning.

Last Friday, the Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) allowed the reopening of another 231 primary schools in Sarawak for face-to-face teaching and learning session beginning Monday (March 8).

It said the decision was made following a meeting held with the state Education Department on the risk assessment of the Covid-19 situation in the state.

“However, a total of 220 primary schools in high-risk areas will remain closes until March 14,” SDMC said.

The Education Ministry had previously announced that 814 primary schools as well as government-aided schools in Sarawak would resume their face-to-face classes from March 1.
