Teen fined RM200 for illegal cockfighting

KUCHING: A teenager pleaded guilty for his involvement in illegal cockfighting in Batu Kawa in December last year and was fined RM200 in default seven days’ jail.

Magistrate Syarifah Fatimah Azura Wan Ali sentenced the 19-year-old accused after hearing a report from the Social Welfare Department (JKM) today (Jan 27).

The Magistrates’ Court heard that the boy and five other persons attended an illegal cockfighting session in an open area at Jalan Ming Chung, Batu Kawa, on Dec 4 last year.

He was charged under Regulation 3(1) of the Measures for the Prevention and Abuse of Animals Act 1962.

The court was told that police raided an open area in Jalan Ming Chung, Batu Kawa, following a tipoff that illegal cockfighting sessions were being held there.

Several people fled into the nearby forest when they noticed the presence of the police. However, six of the men who were hiding in the bushes were rounded up.

Police investigations revealed that cockfighting session did not have any licence from the authorities.

Earlier, in the same court, five local men who were arrested during the incident were fined RM500 or in default two weeks’ jail.

Lim Chai Su, 32, Aloysius Jimie (33), Mixwell Andrew Pidin (26), Jonie Bakak (30) and Petrus Agit (22), pleaded guilty to the same charge as the teenager.

Inspector Mohd Adzmei Ahmad prosecuted while all the accused were unrepresented.
