KOTA KINABALU: A 16-year-old boy was killed in a fish bombing explosion in Pulau Gaya waters near here on Friday.
Kota Kinabalu police chief ACP Habibi Majinji in a statement here today said in the 10.30am incident, the boy from Kampung Pondo Pulau Gaya, who did not have any identity documents, lost both his legs and hands in the explosion and died at the scene.
He said the bomb exploded as the boy was hurling it into the sea and that the sampan (small boat) he was in also broke apart due to the force of the explosion.
Police were alerted about the incident by the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency, he said, adding that personnel of a patrol boat of the agency which had just come to dock at their jetty heard the explosion and a team was despatched to find out what happened.
The team sent found a five-year-old boy crying by the shore and learned what had happened, he added.
The boy’s remains were sent to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital here. – Bernama
