Teen suffers burns in rescue effort

The aftermath of the early morning fire destroys wooden house in Kampung Sitieng.

MUKAH: A teenage boy suffered burns to his body after attempting to extinguish fire that destroyed his family’s house in Kampung Sitieng today (Apr 29).

The 13-year-old sustained burns on the right side of his body and was rushed to the hospital by his family for further treatment.

A spokesperson for the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) reported that firefighters from the Mukah station were dispatched to the scene following a distress call at 1.17 am.

Upon arrival, they discovered that the wooden house was beyond saving, and they used water from a nearby river to extinguish the fire.

Fortunately, six of the seven residents, including the teenage victim, managed to escape the incident unscathed.

The flames were brought under control by 2.15 am, and overhaul works were carried out to ensure there was no risk of reignition.

The operation concluded at 3.00 am. The cause of the fire and the extent of the losses are still under investigation.
