Teen with Nospan pills fined

KUCHING: The Sessions Court on Monday (Jan 30) sentenced a teenager to a RM1,000 fine, in default one month’s imprisonment, for having 8.83g of Nospan in September of last year.

The 18-year-old from Kampung Buntal pleaded guilty as soon as a charge under Section 9(1) of the Poisons Act 1952 and punishment according to Section 32(2) of the same Act were read before judge Afidah Abdul Rahman.

He was charged with possession of the controlled cough narcotic at around 3.30pm on Sept 29, 2022 on the side of Jalan Merbau, Pending.

If convicted, it carries a fine of up to RM3,000 or a maximum sentence of one year in prison or both.

Based on the facts of the case, a police team arrested the male teenager for alleged drug abuse.

As a result of a physical examination, five transparent plastic packets, each containing 12 white pills suspected to be Nospan, were found in the accused’s cross-body bag. The total number of pills found was 60.

The pills were sent to the Malaysian Chemicals Department for analysis, and the report confirmed that they were dextromethorphan, a substance listed under the First Schedule of the Poisons Act 1952.

Prosecution was handled by deputy public prosecutor Mohamad Aiman Mutallib Mohamad Shariff while the accused was not represented by a lawyer.
